High Altitude Balloon 1

2025

Abstract

This project involves designing, building, and launching a high-altitude balloon satellite that reaches the stratosphere, up to 30 km in altitude. The balloon must capture high-definition images and transmit real-time temperature and humidity data to a ground station created by another team. The system should log flight telemetry including location, altitude, temperature, humidity, accelerations, and multimedia data for post-flight analysis. Safety, environmental, and regulatory compliance with relevant bodies is required. Additionally, the payload must be tracked and recovered after landing, and a symbolic representation of USC or the mission must be included in the flight.

Project Details

Create a payload capable of reaching a 30 km altitude

Ensure the payload system is reusable and recoverable.

Take HD photo/video

Record location, altitude, temperature, humidity, and video/photos onboard

Ensure no active guidance system

Have a system to transmit live data to the ground station

Work within a $1250 budget

Follow State and Federal regulations for launching a weather balloon

Project Objective

Develop and design a high altitude balloon satellite system using a budget of $1250 by 4 students in 3 months using off the shelf products.

Mission Needs

Deliver a recoverable data acquisition payload to the stratosphere (30km) and transmit its telemetry data to a ground station.
