CubeSat 1

2023

Abstract

The goal of this project is listed as to “Design and build a CubeSat and appropriate ground station
capable of receiving commands and transmitting sensor and system data.” Within this description there are
sub-tasks that need to be completed, including taking a photo once per minute, storing, analyzing, transmitting and interpreting data, survive blackout zones without solar power or communications, consider thermal and radiation protection, all while complying with all legal requirements.

Project Details

• A photo must be taken every minute
• Data must be stored, analyzed, interpreted, and transmitted using a logic controller
• It must survive static launch loads imparted by the booster team's rocket
• Must transmit all system and status information to the ground system
• Survive through blackout zones without solar power or communications
• Fit and fly inside of the UAV designed by the UAV team
• Consider radiation and thermal protection
• Comply with all legal requirements by governing agencies

Project Objective

Demonstrate design competence by developing a CubeSat and ground station that can collect and
transmit data for $4,321 in a team of four.

Mission Needs

Survive launch to low earth orbit and take a photo every minute while storing and streaming data and
receiving commands.
